Nous sommes en juin 1936, le gouvernement du Front
populaire décide de célébrer la fête nationale en présentant une pièce à Paris « Le Quatorze-Juillet » créée par Romain Rolland en 1902.
L’action se déroule à Paris du 12 au 14 juillet 1789 et retrace les péripéties de la première manifestation révolutionnaire.
Picasso réalise le Rideau de scène (13m25 x 8m30) à
partir d’une petite gouache peinte en mai 1936 qui n’a aucun rapport avec
l’œuvre de Romain Rolland.

We are
in June 1936 and the Popular Front government decides to celebrate the French
National Day by producing a play in Paris based on “Le Quatorze Juillet” (On July the 14th)
written by Romain Rolland in 1902. The action takes place in Paris and
describes the first Revolutionary Demonstration which happened between July 12
and July 14 1789.
Picasso
creates the stage curtain (43 feet by 27 feet) from a small gouache painted in
May 1936 which has nothing to do with the Romain Rolland’s play.
