Toulouse Saint Simon, janvier 2017
To be or
not to be for the "chocolatine" (une chocolatine = un pain au
chocolat = a chocolate filled pastry)
Five high
schoolers from Montauban, a city an hour away by car from Toulouse, just wrote
to the French President to draw his attention to the fact that the word
"chocolatine" was not part of all French dictionaries. They argue
that 25% of French people use the word "chocolatine" and that only
"pain au chocolat" can be found in French dictionaries with very few
exceptions.
In their
letter these students are pointing out that the word “pain au chocolat” is
incorrect that in fact this pastry “Schokoladen croissant” has been invented by
the Austrian Auguste Zang and that it is based on “puff pastry” and not on
bread.
Alors pour "chocolatine » ?
So are you
