Quelques faits :
Saint Sernin est bâtie au 11ème siècle sur le tombeau de Saint Saturnin († 202), premier évêque de Toulouse. Saturnin s’étant transformé en Sernin sous l’influence occitane.
Une abbaye jusqu’en 1790, étape sur le chemin de Compostelle.
De style roman avec du style gothique qui vient s’y ajouter.
Une basilique en pierres et en briques, beaucoup de briques à cause du prix important de la pierre.
A few facts:
To begin with the basilica was built during the 11th century, in honour of Saturnin († 202), first bishop of Toulouse, Sernin being the Occitan name for Saturnin.
Then an abbey till 1790 and a stopping place on the way to Compostelle.
This is the biggest roman church in the world still standing! It is made of bricks and stones, a lot of bricks because of the high price of stone.
A la suite de décapage durant la deuxième partie du 20ème siècle de nombreuses fresques furent mises à jour.
Je rajouterai des détails de temps en temps au sujet de cet édifice.
Frescoes were discovered following interior restoration in the second half of the 20th century.
I will add details relative to this edifice from time to time.
